Weird Squeaking Noise

1999 chevy silverado. 4x4, short box. 100,000 miles. there is a squeaking noise that is coming from the back of the truck. it increases with speed. the faster i go backwards the more repetitions of the squeak you hear. it is only when i am backing up. if i put the truck in neutral and roll back it does not make the noise. it is only present when is in reverse gear. it is not the bed bolts either, as i have shaken the truck to see if it is that. give me a couple of ideas and if you know the relative cost of the fix that would be awesome too. thanks for the help.

First thing that comes to mind is a U-Joint. Some squeak, crackle or snapping sounds when going bad. May show rust as an indicator and no play yet. Would have to pull just that shaft (not real hard to do) out to check it fully. Brakes are a maybe too. See if light pressure on brake while this happens changes the noise a lot. Worth checking back brakes now and then anyway too, T

Not sure - I'm not there listening? Know that the whole differential torques with loads upon it of acceleration and when doing so it's no longer a straight drive-shaft so the U-Joints make up for that. When in reverse it torques the other way and may, said MAY just be turning to a part of the needle bearing out of sight that are bad in that direction. Many U-Joints are fine until a load is on them as they wear into one spot and stay fine when always there. They should always be perfect and some last forever - some don't?? Unseen it's polished surfaces and the needle bearings. They have a habit sometimes of making indentations in the cup and once they start to go they usually go fast. Water is another enemy of them. Don't drive with any bearings anywhere under water - they aren't made to take being submerged. See if I can find a pic of a bad U-Joint inside. That's a good pic if it shows. Those cups should be polished smooth and greasy not indented as shown. That one even indented the cross part - both act as "races" for the joint, T

I think Tom is right about the u-joints. Examine them closely and look for any red powder seeping out of any of the cups. You have to look real close to see it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
