Weird Warning Light in my Saab

Hey, I have a 1997 Saab 900s, which is now showing me a red warning light with an exclamation point in a triangle. It comes and goes, only ever staying on for a few minutes at a time, at most. Here's the weird part: My guages don't really work (speedometer is the only reliable one), but I've noticed that the warning light will come on when my temperature gauge goes into the red. Considering that 90% of the time, the guage doesn't work at all, and the other times, it is giving me random readings (starting at midway when i start my engine), I don't believe the engine is overheating. I've done a lamp check, and all other lamps seem fine. I'm wondering if it could be my thermostat, or anything else? Thanks, Chris

I think that warning light is to get your attention to look at the gauges which you say read erratically?? You can get an idea about engine temp by running heater full blast or have an infrared temp reading done underhood. If heater is cold it's either low on coolant or overheating for real. Not sure how to advise on this except that it should be considered an emergency. Is this mostly just the temp gauge? Do others go way off too?
