Weird battery(?) problem

Hi there, I'm new on this board because my car is a piece of garbage. '93 Pontiac Grand Am 3.2L Okay, here's what happened. My car had a transmission issue and just got it back from the mechanic's today. He couldn't replicate the problems I was having but by talking to each other we pretty much came to a conclusion on what it was. Since he wasn't sure because he didn't experience the problems himself, he disconnected some sort of solenoid in the transmission and said that should stop the problem. (The problem was the car would drive for a while and then once slowing down it would jerk and jump violently and then stall. The car could be started but not shifted into gear without stalling until it had some time to rest and cool down.) Anyway, I just got the car back today and had no problems driving home. A few hours later I headed out for a quick errand. I parked my car and turned it off while my girlfriend ran into a store. She came back about 5 minutes later and when I attempted to start my car it wouldn't turn over. The radio was making loud WHUMP WHUMP WHUMP noises which tells me it's most likely the battery, or maybe the alternator, but I just had a new alternator put in about 2 years ago. Well, we sat in the car for about 20 minutes upon which I decided out of spite to try starting the car again. It chugged a couple times and then boom, it started up again and I drove it back home. What the crap is going on? If the battery's not charging properly while the car is running then how did it magically start back up again after 20 minutes? Seriously, I hate this car, if anyone can please help me I'd be very happy so I can have something to tell the mechanic when I call him back tomorrow morning.

Battery can recover some just sitting. This probably is a battery, charging system, or cable connection problem at hand right now, T

next time it does it take jumper cables and use the ground side of the cables hook 1 too your battery ground and hook the other side to a known good ground you could have a bad ground if it starts like that fine then you have a ground problem if not u have either a starter or charging problem
