What is affected by a high mileage? Sign In

Hi,

I am shopping around for a 2nd hand car,but face many cars with high milage (180.000 - 300.000km/ 5-6 years old). This makes me wonder what the consequenses may be. Is it just the engine that might need replacement or more? I wonder if it would might be worth buying one of such cars, and then replace the engine, or look further and in different places.

Is anyone able to advise on this?

If a car has 300,000km on it, then it's not just the engine that has that mileage. Everything in the car has been used for that mileage including the engine, transmission, suspension, wiring and electronics.

That will likely mean extensive repairs in the future.

Mileage is a major factor in the value of a car so realize, you get what you pay for.

I get the point. This is basically how you end up with cars, of which you can list 2 A4's with failed accessories. Basically, I'm better off skipping such car, and investing in something newer; worth more than replacing each part individually, that might end up being a bigger expense than buying a new car.

Thanks.

I agree,

Find something with reasonable mileage although it will cost more.

PS: I deleted your duplicate response. I know the site times out when you reply but the post does go through.
