accent clutch Sign In

Never pulled a FWD. 97 accent. Had whir noise until pedal was touched but didn't slip. Only chattered at first start. It had to be towed home. I wasn't driving it. I figured throwout bearing but friend says front trans bearing and plate. Also says may have to drop subframe and support from above. Have no SPECIAL tools like a hub shark or engine hoist. Only jackstands and most other home mechanic junk. I'm very handy. Just tried it and it feels like it can't dissengage fully. Advice appreciated. Jim New info. Found piston at trans end pushed out and cocked to side at clutch arm. Leaks there now. Guess something broke, like clutch fingers. NUTZ

I’m assuming the piston you’re talking about is the slave cylinder and you’re probably right that the clutch pressure plate has broken or the clutch release bearing has collapsed; allowing the slave cylinder to over extend and blow apart.
Reading the repair procedure it doesn’t say anything about removing sub frame or anything.
You do have to raise the back of the engine and support it; that’s to take the weight off of the trans mounts.
What I’ve used in the past is a long wrecking bar, four or five feet long. Position the bar under the hood so it will not slip or slide; wrap a chain around the bar. Place a floor jack under the trans remove the trans mount bolts allowing the jack to hold the weight; raise the trans to the required height then attach the chain to the back of the engine. Remove the jack allowing the bar and chain to hold the back of the engine and the trans free of the mounts.
The transmissions in these things are not all that heavy; one person can lift it but they are awkward to hang onto; so have a helper there to balance the thing on the way back in.

Thanks Dan, you hit the nail on the head. You make it sound like a piece of cake. I'll probably still get an over counter manual just to have back up info, and clues for dealing with the blown out cyl. I am very greatful for this Info. Jim (zurfurb) in case I did this wrong in my morning rush to work.
