brake pads Sign In

Have a 98 suzuki esteem--fr disc brakes
driver side front
uneven wear--inside pad worn normal on top half-almost no wear on the bottom. The outside pad shows normal wear both top and bottom halves.
Do I need to replace the caliper or bracket or will bleeding the line to it ? Or shim it ?

Couldn't find a diagram of how this is designed. No matter. The caliper and or the bracket or the pads are jammed would be the likely cause. You should dismantle this and see what isn't working or sliding as it should to determine what is the jam up causing this. Did notice these are available as a loaded caliper and that should cover all the possibilities of the failure except the flex hose which shouldn't be able to cause this top to bottom uneven wear. If corroded and not just a broken item I would strongly consider doing both sides,

Tom;
You were right. A closer inspection revealed that the caliper bent the cast metal pad backing causing the pad surface material to separate from the backing.
Replaced with an old pad I had saved from an old install, about the same wear as the outer pad. That should get me through until warmer weather, at which time I'll replace pads & rotors.
The defective pad was a Raybestos from Checker APs

What may have happened is the friction material separated first then when out of place the force bent the backing metal. That happens here usually on low mileage vehicles that are exposed to the salt used on the roads in Winter. The more expensive pads usually are more corrosion resistant. If that's a problem where you are just look at a couple different grades or brands of pads and rotors and at a glance you can see that some are plated or painted to resist that problem,
