camaro cooling fans dont kick on Sign In

alright i have a 1996 camaro rs 3.8L v6 153xxx miles new tranny 6 months ago.
the problem is the fans wont kick on when driving or letting it sit.
it wasnt a big issue except a few times when the engine was hot enough to spew some coolant out the filler/level check cap. i put more coolant in and it seems to be cooling properly now, but the fans dont kick on. ive checked the relays and they work and ive checked the fan morors and those are also good. this leads me to a short somewhere in the wire. im wondering if this is going to be a very difficult thing or a simple job and if it is just the wires.
thanks for looking hope someone has some insight or help

Do they come on when the A/C is turned on?

Do you know exactly how hot the engine is getting?

Re: camaro cooling fans dont kick on Sign In

i didnt think to look at the guage when it came out the first time DOH and neither the second time DOUBLE DOH. but the most ive seen it get is about 3/4s up the guage roughly 200-245 degrees then its like the thermostat lets lots of coolant in and it goes down to about half. the guage goes from 160-260 degrees. ill check when the a/c is on but i dont think they do. another thing is that someone put stop leak in my radiator so we cleaned it out and put new coolant in and its been working fine ever since. so i think old coolant was a problem with the overheating in the first place. i just dont get why my fans wont kick on. ive checked my repair book i got and it doesnt say when they are supposed to kick on but id bet money if the engine is 3/4 the way up the guage and coolant is spewing they were supposed to be on. thanks for the reply hope this sheds some more light.

Re: camaro cooling fans dont kick on Sign In

It appears that the fans are likely working normally. They aren't even programmed to come on until approx 226 degrees. That's what the sudden drop your seeing is.

You just said yourself that it was low on coolant.

Re: camaro cooling fans dont kick on Sign In

no it wasnt low it was very dirty like someone added a stop leak substance. so we took the hose and pumped water through it and "changed" the coolant in the radiator you could say.

Re: camaro cooling fans dont kick on Sign In

OK, you just said there was a problem with the coolant, you corrected it and it doesn't overheat any more. So, what's the question?

Re: camaro cooling fans dont kick on Sign In

my question is that if it overheated in the first place then that means the fans didnt kick on at all right?

Re: camaro cooling fans dont kick on Sign In

ok well thanks for the help ill check if they turn on when my a/c is on. but just bad coolant alone is enough to make my car overheat even with the fans running?. and i didnt hear them running when it overheated either. and shouldnt they run even after the car is off if the engine is still hot? youve been very helpful and i hope im not annoying you or sounding disrespectful in any of my posts cuz that is not how im trying to seem i just want a better understanding so i can help others out and so i can be that much closer to a mechanic.
