car keeps cutting out

1997 Peugeot 406 2.1 turbo diesel, 120,000 kilometers. The car starts perfectly, drives for approximately 50k, then the rev counter drops to zero and the engine warning light comes on, then the engine stops immediately. By turning the ignition key off completely and restarting the engine as normal while I am still rolling the car starts. I may get 15k or 5 meters before this happens again. I have changed the sensor on the gear box which gives an impulse to the ECU, also I have taken the car to a garage and plugged the computer in to find the fault codes with no joy. The car is basically unusable, can anyone help?

Thats not sold here in the states, so unfortunately I can't get the exact tech info to look at for this, nor have I ever seen one. I would find out what parameters can set the engine warning light. I work with diesel trucks, and many of them have a protection shutdown feature that will flash a warning for 30 seconds if it detects low coolant level, high engine temp, or low oil temp. If the engine hasn't been shut off after the flashing warning the truck shuts down. It can be restarted by cycling the key off and back on. Its not just american trucks either, its standard fare on Volvo. I'm not sure thats what happening for you though. It stalls out without warning and the safety protection shutdown would warn you that it would do it. I think you need a garage with a high end scan tool that can log data for playback to drive this. If they can duplicate the fault while recording they can go back to look over the sensor data to see what is dropping out or acting erratically. Unfortunately, because the tool is quite pricey and the training to know how to read it is so in-depth it won't be a cheap diagnosis.
