my 94 nissan sentra wouldn;t start at first. I put it in neutral and it started. but after driving a little bit, the radio went out, then the headlights went out. I heade dback home but before I could get there, the car started sputtering and stopped. i got it jump started and managed to park it at home, but once stopped it wouldnt start again. is it the battery? or could it be the alternator or starter?

Does anything electrical work or light up right now? A simple test light at the battery and cables might show a bad connection or that the battery is flat right now, T

well I tried starting it now. it wouldn't, then I put it in neutral and it started. I'm afraid to take the car out though and I'm a female grad student, I know nothing about cars and it's c'mas so obviously everything's closed :(( I was able to roll up the automatic windows last night even when the car seemed to be dead, don't know if you can do that with a dead battery.

From your description of the problem, you may have more than 1 problem. As far as not starting in park and will in neutral, there is a neutral safety switch that may be bad. As far as the dying, it sounds like the alternator if not charging and the battery ran down as you were driving. So have the charging system checked first then go after the starting in p-ark problem. Good luck. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

It started so it's not likely the battery itself right now. More likely a connection and possibly right at it or the other ends of the battery cables. I hear you - it's not a good day to go out and break down. If you are not going to fix this yourself make the first destination a shop that will check that out and be able to clean the battery connections and cables first thing. I'm betting that's all it is right now. Good luck, T

way2old and I hit at the same nano second on that. The charging system surely could cause this. Odd it that alone had much to do with it starting in neutral which could be the safety swith as he said - two problems!? T
