check engine light on Sign In

Jeep Grand Cherokee 2014, 167K miles on it - cyl
Check Engine light came on - my mechanic cleared the codes - all 23 of them but within a day the same check engine light came on and after troubleshooting for 2 days he claims its the oil pressure sensor. What is bugging me is that it's intermittently going on and off. I have changed the oil multiple times since I had the car and he's gotten toe coded off of it long enough for it to pass inspection for 3 years running.
He says it's "JUST" a sensor - my problem is that how do I know when the problem is real? Or "Just" the sensor again?
It does seem to come on if I drive more than 20 miles per day. I always check the fluids when it happens. And it goes off, on its own within a day or two.
Any thoughts? The repair IS expensive but I would do it if I felt confident that it would cure the problem AND I would replace the water pump and oil pump if needed at that point.
The car runs great otherwise

JUST a sensor is a problem. You need to dump this so called mechanic and get a real one.

That's ridiculous. It didn't set 23 codes all at once. It's just a sensor is an answer you get from an idiot. Sensors are what makes that engine run and every one of them serves a purpose.

If you want any help from us, you need to post the code numbers, all of them.

*You also said you want to know if something like oil pressure - overheat or very real problems can keep this running well. NEW MECHANIC as Hammer just said.
*If that easy as a sensor than why wasn't it done yet?
* You seem quite willing to fix this for longer and dependable use of it IMO the shops should be wanting you for a customer.
Get this checked out all around for wearing items listed in its manual and make sure things are all up to date, no codes and legit stickers of fitness should be what you want!

Re: check engine light on Sign In

Ok hhere's some updated information for you
The car has been checked by Chriysler Jeep dealer in town
Firestone
2 other mechanics

All say oil pressure sensor and no I do not have the code
All INCLUDING DEALER told me the car is safe to drive

I have checked to make sure oil is in it. No compression leaks indicated.

So if you can get past your "snarky attitude" and answer a question from a non mechanically inclined retired Vet

Is a sensor a good or bad thing?
Can it fail intermittently?
Could the computer module be failing?

The sensor from what all have told me is not expensive but the labor to get it replaced would be. What is involved? Partial engine tear down? If that is the case should I go ahead and replace water and oil pumps given the mileage on the vehicle?

If you can get past the "we are the experts and we know everything" attitude you may prove to be helpful. I have worked in customer service and have never seen anything like yours.

Re: check engine light on Sign In

You've said oil pressure sensor now a few times it's time to check that manually and if hard to get to is the "partial engine teardown" just means take things off to get to it.

Lots of mechanics, dealer too doesn't mean that tech is branded to this type of vehicle just works there hopefully all with credentials to do what they do?

If oil pressure is really off (low) there's damage or harsh wear most likely on this engine if not the cause the result would mean serious problems awaiting.

OTHER: No need to call anyone "snarky" this site is free by volunteer real techs is still not in person like the others. Could all just not want to test oil pressure or why wasn't that suggested by them?

Re: check engine light on Sign In

Tom-
So 4 different mechanics and I have to question the competency of a dealer mechanic?
Firestone and a local guy I could agree that competency might be an issue
What about the other questions?
Is a sensor go or no go?
Could it be the computer module? Are there other things that could be checked to rule serious repairs out?

Assume your new users don't know anything about your web site
Volunteer or not - don't give an off-the cuff response and expect a mechanical neophyte who's too old to crawl under his car to stick around your website when it's implied he's stupid, get the code, get a new mechanic but don't offer suggestions?

You're the one that needs to lose the attitude.

We work for free helping people and we don't give a flying %&$@ if you want our help or not. You cop an attitude and you're gone. Simple as that.

To answer your question, unless any of these mechanics charged you for at least an hour labor to actually test the oil pressure manually, they are just guessing and haven't confirmed anything, experienced or not.

Re: check engine light on Sign In

Vog: Somewhere or how nobody (in person) is zooming in on a real test of anything? YOU and THEY need to understand each other and no doubt you'd like some close idea of cost. If you didn't get that far with anyone IDK what went wrong.

So ask, "How much to test oil pressure" in plain English. You or I suggest you want a gauge hooked up when cold, overnight and also noted how fast it reaches a credible pressure - some really well cared for engines do that before you let go of a key!

If all those oil changes have had the WRONG OIL for this or went low along the way it takes just seconds to do wild wear if zero pressure. Not usually a pump rather it ran out by some other problem.

YOU said this began with driving more than 20 miles so engine sure is fully warm, so is oil when quality of it must keep viscosity up to exacting specs. If running hot and is was VERY hot where you've been that's hard on oil.

Wear happens at start ups if slow to have pressure it's self destructing - that's how it works.

So now ask for a price and get that done to know, then techs know a reason for codes all over the place.

IDK and you don't till someone actually does something to show results. OK?

Re: check engine light on Sign In

I will check with the mechanic that did the last oil change
The light comes on so sporadically and without reason which is driving me crazy
I have gone days with it not on. It then comes on.
For instance. ON a monday I start the car after not running it for the weekend. Light comes on. I check to make sure its got oil in it. The engine runs up to temperature and stays at normal or just below the mid point of the gauge reading. I can go to a store, come out 5 minutes later, engine goes right back to operating temp but the check engine light goes off. It has gone off on me while driving too.
I bought the car from my daughter who drove it hard. I have had the car for over a year and put only 3,000 miles on it. When I had it inspected prior to registering it here in NC the light was on. The mechanic cleared the codes (whatever that means) drove it for the required driving cycles, emission tested it got it passed and gave it back to me. 3 days later, light comes back on but disappears the next day.
Nothing changed. Same oil, same oil level. This is why I asked if the sensor was a go no go sensor that is either good or bad
If it were the wrong oil wouldn't the light come on and stay on? Temperature seems to play no part in this because it's coming on and going off at different temps.
WE have checked for recalls of Jeep products but find nothing that would impact this oil pressure sensor
I will inquire as to type of oil he used and if he did an oil pressure check in the meantime

Re: check engine light on Sign In

So it went thru hell with your daughter - that counts now.
That method for clearing codes and drive around thing can clear up a problem temporarily.

Just say it is worn and with that vacuum is off so all other controls are off. It could foul an O2 sensor and burn some yuk off it with a hard drive. Just an example.

Poke around driving (my world now) is hard on things in its own way. Those need a run on purpose if not you a trusted friend to give it some HWY use helps. I can't so easy (MA) is all slow roads to get to ones with any speed allowed.

Just a note on oil level as you've only used it said 3,000 miles it shouldn't but some can put fuel in oil to make it seem like it's staying full or dirts, water from condensation if an outdoor only thing they don't like it. Worse if parked over dirt, grass or what have you. Concrete or asphalt and covered at least minimizes plain dew that gets in and not out well.

Not really getting anywhere with this ask about oil used and YOU just smell it off dipstick.

Last: Sensors for everything can last ages or blow like a light bulb. Other is wires to them not routed and protected well or work done long before was hard on plugs and plain wire insulation tugging away to get at something else.

It's telling you something so begin with something it isn't going to just heal itself at 167K several things (any car) take a hit most by bad driving habits you just SAID SO prior to YOU,

Tom
