chevy malibu wont start. help Sign In

2001 chevy Malibu, 178,000 miles. when my car was running I couldn't run it below a quarter tank or else it would spit and sputter and I would lose all power. then one day I went to start it up and it wouldn't start. it cranks but wont run. I pulled out my fuel pump and found a bunch of sand and dirt in the white housing for the pump. should I change the pump is my question

Most definitely............
You also need to clean the tank out and find out where that stuff came from. It certainly didn't come with the gas.
If it's rust, then you will have to replace the whole tank.

Was this vehicle in a flood? Seen crap getting into the fuel tank through the EVAP vent valve if the water level gets too high.
