I have a 2005 chevy silverado z71 with a 5.3 motor. I have two questions. 1 is how do you change the lights inside the controls on the steering wheel. It looks like the steering wheel doesn't come apart so the front cover over the control comes off. Number 2 is my check engine light has been on for a couple months. It said the fuel cap was loose so I tightened it and still said it was loose so I put a new cap on it and the light is still on.

You have to pull the Steering wheel off then the back cover and pop the switch out and replace it..

If you cant fix it then dont mess with it...

The air bag has to come off to remove the wheel.....There is access holes on the backside to remove it. It's a snap fit. You just push the springs with a pocket phillips or something similar to remove the airbag....

This is the airbag system so if you aren't familar with it it might be a good idea to leave it alone......If you must mess with it, make sure the battery has been disconnected for a least 10 minutes be for doing anything.

As far as the evap codes go, there isn't a specific "gas cap" code. There are various codes for different sized leaks & systems.... The gas cap is just one common failure item. If you've changed it with an OE one and are still getting the code there is a problem somewhere else.....

Footnote: some manufactures have a "gas cap" light that comes on but that is just tied into a P0455 which is a large evap leak. Leaving a gas cap off will set that code.
