Which scanner are you using? Have you tried flash code diagnostics by jumping A to B in the ALDL? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

You should verify that you have power and grounds to the ECM using a wiring schematic. If that is good and you cannot get flash code diagnostics to work, then you should suspect the ECM as the fault. Don't forget to take the PROM out of the old ECM and put it into the new one if you find you have a faulty ECM. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Reading cars, I am assuming you mean using your senses to get an idea what may be wrong with a vehicle. Due to computer fuel/ignition management you have to use not only your senses, but you have to be proficient in electrical diagnosing, theory of operation, and computer logic to be able to diagnose modern EFI vehicles and make a living doing it. You have to have a logical mindset and be able to strategize. It's a whole different ball game than when vehicles were using points and carbs. We really try to help people on here, but sometimes its difficult because most DIY don't have those skills. Without data from testing systems on these vehicles, its very difficult to determine the cause and correction to resolve people's problems that are brought up in here. Everyday something comes out that makes vehicles systems even more complex. What is even worse is they are not all the same in how they operate. The learning curve is very steep in the automotive trade. You can easily get left in the dust. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I won't confuse things here by adding more advise. But this really sounds like you have an electrical problem here.... Do what was suggested & get the PCM working 1st. It may or may not have anything to do with your problem but you need it working regardless.... This is an OBD I system so the DLC isn't self-powered but you shouldn't need an external source with a Solus but hook one up the connecter anyway and start there.....Get that problem fixed 1st...... If nothing else at least you will be able to use the bi-directional tests once you get the PCM working right and even on a system that old there should be some for the rad fan..... You're not really bugging anyone, you'll know if you make anyone mad,,,,,,well other than Desi, he tends to keep things in so it's real hard to tell when you make him mad or not. This is similiar to me asking you about my old Explorer pulling to the right & wandering.. You'd probably want me to shake down the frt end & take a close look at the radius arm bushing on the R. But when I come back with question about the shocks or maybe putting on a steering stabilizer and what is toe out on turns & scrub radius. You might answer the questions but after a while kinda just let me go on my own route..... Probably not the best analogy but close....

The weird coolant fan cycling on and off and other odd things going on makes me believe it is ECM related Sidom. When ever you can't get flash code diagnostics to work at the ALDL and you know the check engine light works, you have something going on with the ECM. Either you lost ignition/bat power, you lost grounds, or the ECM is faulty. You also verify power and grounds to the ECM... ALWAYS... before condemning the ECM. Those style ECMs weren't very reliable in my opinion especially on the 90-96 Buick Regal, so don't be surprised if that is your problem. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

That was kinda my thinking by the fans cycling so fast...Then throw in you can't get codes with a paper clip & a S/O scanner won't communicate with it really sounds like an intermittent electrical problem. Considering it runs good I would be leaning towards a bad ground as well or grounding/shorted power wire somewhere considering the age of the car. It still could be a bad PCM but I would be surprised....

You have a poster that just wants the magical answer to his problem without having to put any effort into testing anything because he "doesn't have time". I don't have time to waste on people that are too lazy to help themselves. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

theres a difference between lazy n busy,i will make time for this advice,i'm a long ways from lazy!i'm 55 n been workin since 12.i said time is what i need.get off my ass. oh yeah on the explorer, try setting the caster on the rght half degree higher then the other n the camber quarter to half degree higher on the left. too much caster on both sides will cause bump steer, check ur specs.so will a bad balljoint, they stick sometimes.even new tires can have radial pull, cross them to check that.
