cooling Fan Sign In

I have a 2002 Chevy cavalier and the cooling fan continues to run even after you turn off the ignition. Therefore after a while it runs the battery down.I know there is probably a relay that controls this but I don't know where to start looking.Any help would be appreciated.

Re: cooling Fan Sign In

You’ll find the cooling fan relay in the under hood power distribution box (fuse box).
Here’s a schematic of its location in the box.

The relay isn’t in control of the fan; it’s the switch that turns it on and off. The relay is controlled by the PCM (computer).
The problem may just be that the relay is stuck keeping the fan on or it could be a shorted to ground control circuit. (Dark Green wire in diagram) This short or unintentional connection to ground could be in the wiring harness or in the actual PCM.
To determine whether it’s stuck or shorted unplug the relay; hopefully the fan shuts off (it likely will) if so switch it for the heater blower relay they are the same kind of relay. If the fan starts up again you’ll need to find where the control circuit is going to ground (harness or PCM) If it doesn’t star running it’s more then likely that the relay is stuck on.
Sometimes lightly tapping the relay will get it to shut off; if so don’t trust it get a replacement from the dealer.

Thanks that is exactly what the problem was.I tapped on the relay and the fan turned off but it sounded like something rattleing around inside the relay so I went to chevy dealer and got one for $9.Thanks again.
