cruise control not working Sign In

I own a Plymouth neon 1998

When i bought the vehicle the previous owner siad he replace the on/off CC switch in an attempt to fix the cruise control, but said that didnt work. What are the other possiblities of fixing the cruise control? No lights come on at all when you hit any of the cruise control buttons. I checked the fuses, but i didnt see any fuses that might be linked to the cruise control. I dont know if this would even tell anything, but i check the wires that came out to both CC switches with a multimeter, both wires were ok for continuity. Like i said i dont know if that reallt tells anything or not with the cc switch wires, but i figured i would give you as much info as possible, before posting.

Is the check engine light or air bag light on?

Re: cruise control not working Sign In

To save time and aggravation, you really need to find someone or take it to a shop that has a high end scan tool that can access the manufacture side of the engine computer (PCM). With scan tool data you can look at inputs from the switches on the steering wheel and the brake pedal switch to see if the PCM is receiving that information.

The PCM is the brains of the cruise control system. It gets those inputs and then controls the cruise control servo under the hood. If you can find out what is missing, you"ll know where to look for the fault.

The servo is also vacuum operated, so be sure the servo is getting manifold vacuum.

Re: cruise control not working Sign In

do you mean one of those scanners that test the engine fault codes that they allow you to use at Auto Zone or is that a more specialized tool?

well i really dont take cars to the mechanic, and especially the dealership. Is there any other way to self check and fix?

Re: cruise control not working Sign In

There is, but it is time consuming and requires the use of a volt meter. You'll have to back probe the PCM at its connectors and make electrical checks. You'll need the cruise control wiring diagram and connector pin out chart, so you know which circuits to probe.

Edit: Look what I found lurking around on the internet....

EDIT: oh you found one too. Thanks

Re: cruise control not working Sign In

To check the switches in the steering wheel, you connect your volt meter up at PCM Connector 1 PIN 41 red/light green. You have to back probe the connector with a T pin, so you can connect your volt meter to it.

The speed control switch signal circuit is a pull down circuit. That means that the PCM sends 12 or 5 volts down that wire to the switches. Depending on what is pressed that voltage is sent to ground. Some of the positions have resistors so the voltage the PCM sees is going to be lower than what the PCM is sending down. There is a sensing circuit inside the PCM that monitors the voltage on that circuit. The voltage that is on that circuit is how the PCM knows which button your pressed. I can tell you that the OFF button is going to be 0 volts when pressed.

The stop lamp switch circuit operates the same way as the switches circuit. You should see 12 or 5 volts at the PCM connector 1 pin 62 when the brake pedal is depressed. With the brake pedal released, you'll see close to 0 volts.

The two outputs vent and vacuum solenoid circuits are pulse width modulated. That means the PCM is sending a voltage (probably 12 volts) on and off really fast to control the solenoids. The longer the solenoid is on the more vacuum it applies to the servo or the more vacuum it dumps. Not sure what the volt meter should read on those two circuits because the meter is too slow to see fast switching signals.

The speed control on and off switch sense I am not to sure about. It may be another pull down circuit like the stop lamp switch sense circuit that could be used as a back up to halt the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed.
