1989 dodge ram D-100 318/5.2l 4wd TBI started rough then got worse over few hours till wont start any more lack of power, possibly lost few piston while it was running. I have fuel delivery into the intake but now will turn over fine but wont crank, sounds if only one piston is sparking then dying Transmission was replaced, have a transfer case leak so fluid is low yes but shifts into 4low only way was able to move it. cap and rotor was replaced and have a spare brain if you think its worth it too replace as well. thank you sonier

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment. If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money. Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for. These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause. 1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on. 2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on. 3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off. 4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test. Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out, you will know which system is having the problem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

i didnt have this problem, until i got back after a week vacation, i had a very rough idle, then i replaced the aluminum fuel lines with rubber ones, i had issues after i replaced the tranny because my speedometer mileage cable wouldnt link up to the transmission i installed. the gas tank was in the way, i havnt had time to tap and drill some holes to add this new tank underneath the rear of my bed, but going to. so in the meantime im running the tank out of ht ebed of truck with 3/8 ID hosing for return and flow. could this be where my ussue would be? BTW i have a spare 1989 dodge ramcharger so i have a replacemnt part for everything except radiator to front end

You'll have to check your fuel pressure to find out but it could be the source of your problem.

Just don't throw parts at it without testing. That's even more expensive. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

ok well i did a old trick, since its TBI its similiar to a carb and i use to have batery issues so too make it start easy id pour some gas into the tbi to prime it and it crank right up without dying. well i did that and it wouldnt make a difference no matter what. so fuel delivery is not the problem. this is a rebuilt engine 30k miles, when i replaced the tranny manual turning the flex plate was a pita, so it hass a lot of compression a lot. compared ot my junker truck with 160k miles that flex plate turned fairly easly. so i know i got fuel and compression so i dont have spark, any advice at this point?

Don't assume you have compression that way. You need to check spark and do a compression test if you do have spark. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

any way to do a poor man back yard spark plug check?, lol i know from logging and chainsaws you can pull the plug and crank it and watch if its sparking but somin tells me not so good idea for a bigger engine lol

You can buy an adjustable spark tester for about $4 You might want to check for injector pulse first. If you have no injector pulse then check for power on the +side of the coil and one side of the injector with the key first turned on.

Injector pulse is the electronic signal that operates the injectors. You use a little bulb called a noid light and you plug it into an injector plug and crank the engine. If the light flashes, you have power and pulse to the injectors.

If you can see the injectors actually spray when cranking, that would indicate injector pulse is present.

That is powered by the ASD relay. Make sure you check that when the key is first turned on because it may only power for a few seconds until the computer sees a crank signal.

Nobody said to replace the ASD relay. I told you that the power comes from there which means it needs to be troubleshooted by following a wiring diagram to see if it's getting all the inputs that it should. This business isn't just full of magic answers where you just throw parts at it and it's fixed. You have to trace and test the wiring. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

yea......... I dont understand wiring in vehicles, i understand everything else can rebuild engines but when electricity steps in im lost lol. So what im really considering si just going ahead and do something ive wanted to for a while. switch to a carb im tired of this electronic control junk. i have no emmision control out where i live so im just gona go ahead and mill out some adapter plates, swith the distributor and inline fuel pump and slap a 4 barrel on there. thankyou for your help :)
