Going to be buying a durango here real soon. (used) Between about 1998 and 2002. Need to know what engine i should look for. There are a few in the V8 category... ~4.7L, 5.2L, or the 5.9L. Is the 4.7 going to be ENOUGH? What has more hspwr?~ 4.7 or 5.2. Is the 5.9's power rivaled by poor gas mileage? Just wanted someones opinion? Dealers seam to just talk about the ones they NEED to sell.

I might not be able to give you all the specs you are asking for as far as mpg & hp rating.. but if you can tell us what you are planning on doing with it, we might be able to give you some insight. Like if you're planning on doing some heavy towing with it, then a durango probably wouldn't be the best vehicle for this. As far as "being enough" only you can really answer that question. Sounds like you've already narrowed down what you want and that is good. The best advise I can give you is if there is one or two you are really looking at, 1st take it out & test drive it. Put some miles on it, not just a quick 10 minute drive. You'd be surprised what you notice after you've been driving it for a while and go by yourself, leave the salesman at the lot. By all means get it out on the freeway. Once you've finally got the one you want, before you commit to it, take it to your shop and have an inspection done on it. You may spend a $100 to find out you now don't want it but it's a lot better then spending thousands buying a vehicle that you find out later than you now don't want and are stuck with..........

If you're worried about fuel mileage, why the hell are you even looking at a V8 powered SUV? If you tow something heavy, the Durango isn't good with any engine. Its a glorified soccer mom ride with 4x4. If you want something to haul stuff, then realize that gas mileage is going to suck. But get something that can actually pull a load without breaking every 6 blocks (i.e. a truck that is made to do it) if you just want the room, get a minivan. If you live in a northern climate and are worried about bad roads, get an all wheel drive minivan. But I will tell you than a durango with a 4.7 has barely enough power to get out of its own way. Get the biggest engine and it will have to work the least to move the vehicle, which rewards you with longevity. But when you look at something that big, keep this in mind; if fuel economy is a concern, this entire class of vehicle is one you cannot be happy with no matter which engine it has.
