drive axle Sign In
on a 1994 toyota camry xle V6 how does one separate the right side drive axle from the intermediate shaft? Currently both are removed from vehicle as one piece.

I don't think that they come apart unless you take the inboard CV joint apart. I believe it is part of the housing. When you buy a reman axle it comes with the intermediate shaft and CV all as one. The later years the shafts would come apart.

yes they do come apart because I have already purchased a new drive axle and the intermediate shaft does not come with it

Remove the bolts from the inboard cover. Smack the joint where the shaft covers together with a rubber mallet. Install shaft onto new CV axle and install bolts with washer hand tight. Install axle into vehicle. Tighten the six joint bolts to 49 ft/lbs after installing outboard CV into wheel hub bearing and lower ball joint into lower control arm while someone is holding the brake.

Tighten bearing pinch bolt to 24 ft/lbs.
Lower control arm bolt and nuts to 94 ft/lbs
Tighten CV axle nut to 217 ft/lbs
Stabilizer link nuts 29 ft/lbs
Tie rod end castle nut 36 ft/lbs. Note: Do not loosen to line up cotter pin hole.

Hint: Tighten the axle nut with the wheel installed and on the ground.

Make sure that you top off the transaxle fluid if any was lost.
