All right, all you psychic mechanics - who wants to help diagnose my problem? I have a 95 Merc Villager, and it's picked up a miss in the last few weeks. The good - NOTHING goes wrong with this car. It has 180k on it, and mostly sits in the driveway. It's not bad gas. The bad - I've done little more than the basic maintenance on it. I changed the plugs about 10k ago. I've never changed the wiring or rotor. The cap and rotor look OK - the contacts are gray, not black or pitted. I did buy new wires, but didn't install them yet. But it seemed to be the place to start. I'll spring for the ignition parts, next. But the guy at the store wondered if it was an injector issue? He suggested trying a cleaner (sea foam?). None of this would hurt, but money is very low these days. Any suggestions, aside from quit being so cheap??? (jobs are hard to get at 60!) The miss is mostly intermittent. May be unnoticeable, or may be bad, below 2000 rpm. Hot or cold. It's probably always a little bad under load. I suspect it's ignition, but would like to hear from greater minds. Would any of this be picked up by a code reader - if this car has a plug? Thanks!

You can't start looking elsewhere until you know you have good ignition parts and you can't do that overlooking the wires, cap and rotor. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

180K on the cap, rotor and wires...my gosh What about the timing belt...don't you think that is a little over due? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

No surprise answers here, so I guess I'm on the right track, and will stick with the suggested basics. And don't make things worse for me - the timing belt was changed. I've got 25k left to ignore the next fix. At this point, I'm just daring the car to break down. My wife keeps hoping it won't pass inspection. It was my first Japanese car. I've never had a car so reliable! But I'm not dying to see it go. I'll spring for the cap and rotor, and change everything at once. Thanks, all.
