f150 steering problem Sign In

i just bought a 2004 f150 xlt crew cab 4x4. everything was great when i drove it home and for a few days after. then i got in it one morning to go to work and when i made the first turn i noticed the wheel seemed to get hard then easy then hard then easy...to turn. it doesnt matter if it is going into the turn or coming out of it. i checked the fluid and it was fine. it has been a couple days now and sense this started it has not stopped. any suggestions

From your discretion I would check the coupling shaft between the steering column and the steering gear.
This shaft usually has a couple of universal joints in it, like a short driveshaft; if one of those joints is beginning to seize, it might be the cause of this?

Dan is correct on the little u joints. These get rust and dirt in them and get stiff and that is what is giving you yout tight then loose feel. You can disconnect it from the steering box, spray the little u joint with penetrant and work it around until it frees up. See if this helps.
