Perhaps y'all can help me out a bit.
On a 85 Ford Tempo, I am adjusting the rear brakes manually every 6 or 8 weeks.
One side clicks when I tighten, the other does not, but both require quite a bit of adjusting range.
When not adjusted, braking is soft and emerg brake doesn't grab ( at all ).
When adjusted for very slight drag, braking is firm and E-brake works ok.
When I remove the drum, nothing looks missing or out of place .. ?

The next time you go to adjust the brakes; back off the emergency cables until they are at the full rest position. The cable adjuster is below the lever inside the car; you may need to lift or remove the console to get at the 13mm nut on the cable.
Then see if the ratchet lever and the star wheel of the adjuster are in contact with each other, if everything is in place they should be.
If so, then adjust the shoes with the star wheel until you get that slight drag that you mentioned. Pump the brake pedal and recheck your adjustment that’s to center the shoes in the drums.
After this adjustment is complete, adjust the emergency cables so that the lever (inside the car) has 5 or 6 click but not adding any drag to the wheels when released.
Here’s a few things to keep in mind: Brakes that are freshly hand adjusted will give you the best pedal height; the self adjusters even when functioning properly will never adjust the shoes that close. Expect to lose ½ to 1 inch of height after a few miles are driven.
Use the emergency brake; that is when the self-adjusters are activated; not like some as you backed up applying the brake pedal.
The emergency brake cables (all three) must move freely when applied and released. If they are sticking in the slightest and not fully returning when released, they will hold the adjuster lever up and away from the star wheel of the adjuster. Leaving you back at square one, under the car constantly adjusting the brakes.

Thanks much, Dan.
So this car self adjusts only with the E-Brake?
This will help me much. I will pull the drum & see what action the E-Brake causes.
( The cable adjustemnt at the lever is fully taken up, I suppose due to age & stretch, making the brake adjustemnt all the more necessary)
