front end part ? Sign In

When I bought new tires about 4 years ago, they told me they were unable to align the front end because there was a part worn out that allowed too much play in the front wheels for proper alignment to be possible. They showed me how much up and down play the wheels had by placing a bar under the front tire while it was lifted slightly and moving the wheel up and down. They wanted about $250 to replace the part. I cant remember what he called the part. It seems like it might have been a bearing plate?? Does anyone know what this part might be. The car is a '97 Jetta, 5spd, front wheel drive. thanks.

could be the wheel bearings, or the upper/lower ball joints.

bearings dont usually just loosen up......they for the most part make loud rumbling noises.

ball joints will rattle and the steering/suspension will feel loose.

surprised you made it 4 years with any of those parts being worn out

it wasnt the wheel bearing or ball joints, it was something above the shocks. shock plate or bearing plate maybe, as in weight bearing as opposed to ball bearing.

Yes...its called a strut mount bearing plate, its a bearing between the top of the strut and where the car body meets.
