help im confused Sign In

i have a 2002 grand am se it was running fine one day and wouldn't start the next. i've replaced the plugs and wires and that got it to start now it won't stay running. i tried a fuel pressure check and with the key on i get about 25 pounds of pressure and when i try to start it the pressure drops we tried changing the fuel filter still nothing the pump kicks on and its getting gas but im told it could be the fuel pressure regulator i'm really confused what could be wrong

I don't know what engine you have but I do know 25PSI is too low for all of the engines. You will have to pinch off the return line to test the regulator.

I seriously doubt all those facts are correct. The fuel pressure spec for that engine is 52-59 psi so if you really had 25PSI, then you have a lot more problem than just a fuel filter. It's nearly impossible for a fuel filter to do that without ruining the pump too.

If its running now, don't expect the pump to last much longer. Like HT says, your clogged filter worked that pump way harder than it ever should have and has probably been doing so for some time until it finally couldn't overcome the restriction. Most never start again after that. Those that do don't have long to live. I realize this isn't exactly a cheap pump for this car, but tow trucks are also expensive and you may need one soon if you run on the pump you have.
