load whining noise Sign In

got a 09 chysler town and country with about 124,000 miles, believe its a 3.8 v 6
problem is when im going thru town there is a slight whining sound coming from the rear of the van,
once I get going about 55/65 miles an hour it gets real loud and almost sounds like a motor humming and kind of has a pulsating sound to it also,
could it be the rear bearings ? any help from you guys would again be greatly appreciated
Dennis from wisconsin

Re: load whining noise Sign In

1st thing you want to do is look at the tread on your tires....If it's choppy, this can make noise.... If the tread is bad, you could rotate the tires... This will move the noise to the frt but eventually it will quiet down or the only other option would be to replace the tires....

It the tread is good, take the van out and (safely) veer from side to side....if this changes the pitch of the noise,,,, this would indicate a bad bearing...

Forgot to mention, tires are new, anyway I rotated the tires and it's still making that noise, I can tell it's coming from the back, kinda of a wining noise then gets loaded like a motor humming when I speed to about 55/65 started to do this about 3 months ago, can't figure out what the hell it is, could it be the bearings in the hub assembly?

Does the noise change with on or off throttle?

Does the noise change with left to right swerving at a constant speed?

It gets louder when I accelerate, don't change when swerving at all

That tends to point to an issue with the pinion bearing in the differential.

Re: load whining noise Sign In

That's not a DIY job. The loose metal that came off those bearings ran all through the differential and potentially damaged the rest of the components in the differential. Generally when something like this happens, it is proper to go through all the bearings and inspect the condition of the gears.

This requires some very specific tools, equipment and knowledge. Most general mechanics stay away from this type of work for those reasons.

Could it just be low on differential oil ? I believe I'll check that first, thanks

Re: load whining noise Sign In

Probably is............ That's what ruined the bearings in the first place.

It's too late now to worry about fluid level.
