my 91' mazda protege lx has been functioning exceptionally well for its age, but recently while driving the rpms shoot up and i can hear the engine revving up even though i am only driving at low speeds. normally the rpms float around 2, but now shoots up to three or slightly higher and drops. i think it might not be shifting properly. I dont know what i should do

Yes, that sounds like a transmission issue. You need to get it checked out by a trans shop. Check the fluid level first.
