oil in water reservoir

I am a recent widow, who little nothing about cars. I checked my 'fluids' and the water in my radiator resrvoir was oily. What does this mean? what do I do? thanks for your help........older car, but runs great 89 olds.

It could just be old and getting dirty but it could be oil from transmission cooling in radiator or from a head gasket problem in the engine. If cooling system hoses are getting soft the problem is bad. You could get the cooling system flushed for now and clean that reservoir and see what returns if it does. If slow enough it will be hard to know at first. Is another fluid low like the trans or engine oil -- and are they showing signs of engine coolant in them which would make them look milky? If you intend on keeping this car you should get this fixed soon as it may minimize the expense. Good luck, T
