can't get car to shift out of park, the button won't push in

2004 chevy trailblazer, can't release button on shift to get into gear. I know that you have to depress brake pedal and hear the click, I hear that but sometimes still cannot get into gear...

Make sure brake lights work as that is usually part of the system and may be the problem, T
