I have been running my air a lot lately and I have been noticing a funny smell, kind of like propane but weaker. Is my mind playing tricks on me or am I really smelling this??? I'm driving a 91 cavalier z24.

The usual refridgerants don't have any smell. An oil leak on an exhaust manifold can make a smell but it's more like and exhaust smell. T

I'm dealing with a propane smell with my 2002 Chevy Tahoe right now. It started immediatly after dealer installed new rear axle to replace a damaged one. I have heard through other groups that this could have something to do with a bad (incomplete)seal in the rear end and "smells" are escaping and coming in through open windows. Mechanics are having trouble and the dealership that had it when problem started have given up and suggested I shampoo the carpets. Great! If you have any thoughts please send me email so I can get this problem fixed. Thanks very much. Mark

The smell is added to propane on purpose. Gear oil does have a distinct odor that I might say is like propane.

The only time real propane is used is in A/C which I think is illegal.

If gear oil is leaking you should see it and probably would only smell it if it was super heated or burning on exhaust parts. That should leave some evidence, T
