Sounds like corrosion/rust has weakened or destroyed what I'll call "firewall" as a "bulkhead" as you put it and there probably is a TSB (technical service bulletin) or plain recall possible even at the age of it now. It concerns me that if this area is that bad then what else is also that bad and should the car be fixed at all! Already said, if this area is so corroded it can't support the clutch pedal (which I'm envisioning) then what else is so bad that this car is outright dangerous!
