Frown hi my friend owns a 1996 ford explorer and he was telling me that when he puts the key in the ign and tries to start the car it dosen't start in drive, he has to put the gear in nuetral then it starts, he was also explaining to me that a friend of his did something to the brake pedal switch wires about a month or two ago, i am suspecting that this is the cause but i am not sure. if anyone can help i would be graetfull. thank you all GOD BLESS YOU.

Re: shifter/start Sign In

Sorry I'm a bit confused by the question. Is this an automatic that won't start in PARK but will in Neutral? If so that would be an issue with the neutral safety switch or loose linkage not getting perfectly in position.

Standard shift vehicles will need clutch to be depressed to allow starter.

Automatics do start but won't shift out of PARK until brake pedal it applied which should be a brake light switch problem usually if that's the case??
