1st question, tdc compression stroke, how do you have it set, before putting om timming belt, does the reference mark on the crank pulley line up only on that stroke, or on the exaust stroke too. This is a 1987 volvo 240DL, my Haynes manual is to vague.

use that mark then pull your dist. cap off and verify the rotor is pointing at your #1 plug wire then you know your at tdc

well I already pulled the distributor, thinking this was the problem before i found the broken timming belt, however I thank you for your help, now I do I get everything back in line.
