Hey Guys, sorry haven't had time to visit the site lately...but I have got a problem with a 92 toyota cressida head, its a dohc...while to try to save cost by going with a used head $300.00 compared with a new one $600.00, the used one don't come with a warranty of any kind,..buy as is, this applies to all my salvage yards here except one , so you have to take the word of the person that the head is alright and if not you have lost your money, the thing is that I did manage to find one salvage yard that has one for $400.00 with a lifetime warranty plus parts and labor...( Greenleaf ) how about it Tom any relation? Well anyway do you guys have any suggestion that might help me and give me some kind reason why these other salvage yards don't have a warranty on these heads.

Smile buddy - my cars will outlast me! Just watch someone go in 10 years from now when I'm gone and the cars are 30 years old and look for the warranties! (they're in the glovebox folks) No joke - I still rib a now 90 year old machinist who made a part for my '48 that didn't last long enough - that was 35 years ago and I still have the thing! I'd spend the extra $100 for this for the warranty. What happened to the original head? Is a used one just as is or has it been to a machine shop? Why is that head so expensive used anyway? Seems like an aweful lot for such an old car to me!! T

Tom, the original is wore out in the cam journals but the rest is o.k., so I've been told that when its in that condition you junk it.....I had it looked at by 3 machine shops. And a couple others said it was just wear and tear.....no one could tell me why these used heads are so expensive, (I really miss the cast iron ones)....and with the price of metal going up its gonna get harder to get any used parts at a fair price. The owner is a friend and he loves this car.To me,... the cost of that head is ridiculous...I feel the same about the extra $100 too....if you know anywhere else that would have it at a lesser cost/with some type warranty please let me know.

Some thoughts on this: Does this head have a predisposition for this problem? If so used isn't such a great deal at all if the car's is a "keeper" as it seems. Is it that nice that it's going to last a lot longer? I'm just thinking that at the age of it and that I don't consider this some collectible car that you could buy a whole wreck for those prices and still have the heap to sell for junk. It's your friend and customer and now you have a burden of getting this done cheaply by parts - guessing the labor is about the same anyway you do this. How about let him go find the part and accept whatever warranty comes with it. If it passes a check out at a machine shop that shouldn't be an issue. I'd make it understood that if that part then failed the redo was on it. His gamble for saving the bucks. Does that sound fair? Seems like you are going to spend more time hunting down the lower price part then the job is going to take, T

Tom,...Myself, I really believe this is a keeper, the engine is in excellent shape/trans too.......my friend couldn't get over the gas mileage it has, there are several people that has came to me with vehicles in question far as repairing/or buying another...... they rather have them repair than go in debt, I ran into a man with a 93 dodge van with almost 200,000 miles on it but he insisted in the repairs which ran about $1600 go figure, I know there are 3 kinds of cars 1# a piece of junk/ 2# a keeper/ 3# an investment with 100% return. I have done the best I can looking for reasonable priced head and he's been looking too.... but you know when your at the end of your rope....I need to get it done, cause people are stopping to ask if this car is for sale, thanks for your insight Tom
