I have a 1998 Pontiac transport van. The problem is that it takes to long to crank at start up. For example if you drove to the store and when in side. When returing it turns over to many times before cranking and sometimes the engine sounds like it slows down and pick back up quickly after starting. I had it tuned- up and the mech. said he changed the air flow value and also cleaned the mass air flow. The veh. runs a lot better on road performance now but continue to turns to many times at start up. My the way before the taking to long to crank problem the veh. did start on the first turn most times.

Have you battery and electrical system tested sounds like you might have a weak battery. GM ASEP 26 SCC Milford ASE certified in Brakes and Electrical on Thursday April 5th 2012

Also have your mechanic test the fuel rest pressure in the fuel rail. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

When you know it's going to take a long time to start, try cycling the key for the off to on position about 3 or 4 times, leaving it in the on position for about 3 to 4 seconds each time & see if that helps it start a little faster.... And as Speed mentioned, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have the battery checked either....

The battery is good i have good cranking power. I called the mech. and he said the rail pressure tested good.

Well, what Jon & I were getting at, is the pressure bleeding off over time....If this happens then it can cause extended cranking time...... You can A.....moniter the pressure with a gauge & see if it bleeds off or B.....cycle the key before cranking the engine. What this does is runs the fuel pump for 2 seconds and repressurizes the line. If this gets the engine to start quick again, then you are looking at a fuel problem.... And as Speed mentioned....The battery needs to be load tested, just because it will crank & engine over, doesn't mean its good and you would be surpised at what kind of problems a bad battery can cause..... with diags......You can get in a world of hurt real fast by overlooking the basics & not testing them because they "look or seem" ok
