Is coolant coming out the vent hole? That's indicative of a defect. By pass hose, timing cover, t-stat housing or intake gasket leaking? Sometimes, a leak can come from above, run downwards, and 'appear' to be coming from the pump. Best thing, would be to pressurize the system, then check as Tom suggested.
