Can a faulty or broken water pump on a ’94 bmw 540i cause the radiator fan to explode and destroy the fan, fan-housing, radiator and bearing? THe shop where i took my said this is what happened. I just had the rad replaced last month and yesterday noticed the fan hitting the housing. I took the car in and when they started it the fan exploded into the housing destroying it and the rad. I believe the reverse is true: that the fan hitting the housing blew apart into the rad and the force of the fan/housing threw off the bearing and blew the water pump. which Scenario is more likely

Belt driven water pumps with fan on them can let go and fan causes unknown amount of damage. If it uses a fan clutch that can do it also. There should have been some wild symptoms - noise, leaks but possible that bearing(s) gave out quickly losing control of the fan and whatever is in it's way gets damaged including it, T Ps: You noticed the fan hitting and should have investigated right then. Fans themselves rarely are the cause....
