windshield wiper problem

With only a light rain, my windshield wipers do not sweep back and forth smoothly. They seem to catch, as though there is too much friction caused by too much pressure exerted against the windshield. They do not stop, but move with a jerky chattering motion. With a hard rain they work fine. Using the intermittent setting would probably solve the problem, but there is no such thing on this car--a 1981 Corolla. Any ideas?

Have you used Rain-X on windshield? That's the problem if so. It's making it too dry until harder rains. Could also be a wax perhaps. If Rain-X it's a pest to remove - try brake parts cleaner on a rag wet with it while windshield dry. Just get the glass itself nothing else. May need to do this several times or switch to carb cleaner too. Clean wipers blade rubber with rubbing alcohol or replace even better. If none of those waxy things used still clean the glass as it could be something from the road doing that and you'll see it on a clean cloth/paper towel when removed, T

Yep, sounds like a good windshield cleaning and new blades are in order. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks, everyone. No, I have never used Rain-X, nor has wax ever been applied to the car, in the 14 years I have owned it. Before that it belonged to my father. I can't remember when this problem started. The funny thing is that my mechanic recommended Rain-X to SOLVE the problem. When I read the label on the can at the store, it said not to use it where it could get on painted surfaces, so I decided against it. I'll try replacing the blades.

Give the windshield a good cleaning first with fine steel wool and glass cleaner. There is all kinds of stuff in the air that can contaminate the glass surface.
