My 98 Escort warms up to operating temperature and will blow out warm air for about twenty seconds, after which it starts blowing out cold air. I can turn off the blower for five minutes and turn it on again and warm air comes out again for about twenty seconds. Could this be a bad heater core? Blocked hoses?

I think that would be the heater core. Try flushing it forward and backwards but take care not to use full pressure of available water. You may see junk come out or not. If a lot of junk comes out you are probably all set. If that doesn't work hit back and we'll see what we can do, T
