Curious about whether something needs to be done at the shop Sign In

I am getting my steering gear, front struts, power steering pump, and tie rods ends replaced. Do I need to have a power steering flush done at he same time?

I have replaced the power steering pump in a different car myself and didn't have to do anything special. I have had some of these parts replaced as a one-off before and never had to have one done.

This time, the garage says I do and at a cost of $169. I can't really understand why. Can someone either confirm that I need this done or give me the confidence to be able to say no don't do that at the same time.

It is a 2008 Kia Spectra. I was out of country, my daughter was driving it, hit a curb, her friend "fixed" it. I came home, the power steering cap was off, the car wasn't acting right so I took it in. It doesn't surprise me that the tie rods need to be replaced, or the pump.

Thanks so much in advance,

The answer to that question is a question. Why is the pump being replaced?

If it's being replaced due to a leak, then no it wouldn't need to be flushed. If the pump had an internal failure, it likely spread ground up metal through the system. There's also the possibility that it doesn't even need a pump. You said the cap was off which will make it spit out the fluid. Once low on fluid, it will get very noisy and will remain that way until all the aerated fluid sits long enough for the air to rise to the top.

I think the $169 is a bit of a ripoff though considering all the fluid will be drained when the pump is removed. That's most of the flush done already.

This is sounding like you are going to a chain type shop, probably a tire store. If so, find a good independent shop. Those chain stores are trained to upsell everything.

They said the pump was leaking. I need to go find a good mechanic somewhere in town, maybe that will be my project is to ask around this weekend.

Thank you for confirming my ill feelings about the scenario.

Get some word of mouth references on a reputable shop.

If you belong to any neighborhood groups like Nextdoor or Facebook, you can ask for recommendations.
