RAD Sign In

I HAVE A 92 DAKOTA 3.9 V-6 4X2.
I WAS ON MY WAY TO AMES TONITE. BEFORE I TURNED TO GO INTO TOWN...STEAM WAS COMING FROM UNDR MY HOOD. STOPPED...INSPECTED...FOUND A 2" CRACK IN THE TOP OF THE RAD NEXT TO THE HOSE CONNECTION. MADE IT TO W-MART. GOT STOP LEAK/J-B QUIK WELD.
SANDED THE CRACK. APPL'D J-B. WAITED 5 MINS FOR CURE. STARTED ENGINE...OBSSERVED...WATER IN RAD WAS WARM-NOT HOT...REPLACED CAP-LOOSE...SOME STEAM WAS COMING FROM AN UNCOVERED SPOT IN HOSE FITTING...CHCKED HEAT GA. THE DIAL WAS JUST OFF "H". STOPPED ENG.WAITED FOR WIFE.
AFTER 15 MIN...STARTED ENG...REMOVED CAP...OBSERVED...ALLOWED ENG TO RUN 5 MIN...FELT UPPER HOSE...WARM...FELT LOWER HOSE...WARM...ADDED WATER FROM A JUG FROM BED...WATER WAS "SPRUTING" UP FROM THE RAD OPENING...RECKD HEAT GA...SAME...CHKD HEAT...NO HEAT.
WHEN MY WIFE CAME TO THE TRUCK...STARTED ENG...PUT IN R...ENGINE DIED. I GOT ITGOING & DROVE ABOUT 2 MI...SLOWED TO TURN...ENGINE DIED...MADE TURN TO SIDE OF RD. WAITED 5 MIN...RESTARTED ENG...DROVE DOWN INTERSTATE...ENG WAS MAKING SOME NOISE...KEPT DRIVING...ENG CHANGED SPEED...RESUMED...CHG'D SPEED...RESUMED...SLOWED & DIED...WOULD NOT RESTART. HEAT GA SAME.
I'VE WORKED AROUND AUTO ENGINES OVER 50 YRS &NEVER RAN INTO THIS.
I SUSPECT A THERMOSTAT PROBLEM. I SUSPECT THE THERM IS STICKING. ON THE WAY IT STUCK SHUT...CAUSING THE OVERHEAT'G...CRACKED RAD & OBSERVING THE "SPURTING"...I SUSPECT IT IS OPENING & CLOSING...OPENING & CLOSING.
DOES ANYONE HAVE AN IDEA WHAT IS OCCURING & THE SOLUTION? I PLAN TO REPLACE THE THERM/FINISH REPAIR'G CRACK.
THANX

Re: RAD Sign In

You should replace the radiator and the thermostat and flush the coolant system . Rigging the radiator is just going to lead you to more overheating down the road.

Once you fix the cooling system problem, then you can tackle the drive-ability issue.

Re: RAD Sign In

You cannot glue those radiators. All that will get you is a blown head gasket or worse. You have probably plugged everything up with the stop leak now anyway. You've made your problem twice as bad as it was.
