Weird Temp Readings

I have a friend who lives across the country from me that has a 92' Corolla LE. He's on a fixed income and can't afford a mechanic. From what he's told me his Corolla for the past two years, when it reaches operating temperature, the Temp gauge drops low when he puts it in Drive and lower as he accelerates, it reads increasingly colder the more he accelerates. He says that it only does it in drive and not in Park, Neutral or Reverse. Just recently he developed a crack in his radiator, but the gauge has been doing this for two years. Any ideas?
