i have a 02 hyundai sonata v6, 2.7, 120,000 miles. not long ago the ac quit blowing cold air even though it was recharged recently. it also would make odd noises when turned on. a few days ago a strong burnt rubber smell came from under the hood. it was very strong but only lasted a few minutes. it hasn't done it again. a friend said it's the ac compressor. just looking for a second opinion because of the cost of that repair. thanks, John Lee

This would be consistent with a seizing compress with belt burning over it. Check that the belt is OK now. Charge didn't last but probably worked a little while and lost the charge which carries the oil to lube compressor and it may have seized up and is just a pulley right now. There are safeguards to shut down a compressor but some are just too late. Could use a static pressure and the temp of the area for starters. Just a plain pressure and temp and look around front of compressor for oil evidence, T
