I have a 2006 Chevy Malibu Lt. It is a 6 cyl. This moring I was driving it and it sputtered for a minute and then it started running okay, but the air is blowing warm and you can hear a grinding noise under the hood.

It sounds like your compressor may have failed. If you can confirm this, you will need to have the compressor replaced along with the accumulator and orifice tube. You may need to flush out the condenser if it came apart internally. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

The noise you describe concerns me. It sounds like the bearing is bad for the A/C pulley and if that is the case, yes the belt can get destroyed and then you will be dead on the side of the road. You need to get it looked at to determine if this is really the case.

To add: If no noise with compressor off - unplug it and wire tie plug safely out of harms way if quiet without A/C. Noise when compressor is on can happen with defrost selections also. A GM messed up compressor will throw debris thru system that will need flushing out. Not all condensers are flushable so know that when and if debris is found, T
