01 pontiac grand am 4.3 the car over heats sometimes. i replaced the thermostat. it help a little. when the engine is cold you start the car and the car over heats. if you have the heater on there is no heat coming out of the heater. the anti-freeze comes out of the radiator cap. if you turn off the car and turn it back on the heat comes out of the heater and the cars temp is around 200 deg. i also had it to a chevy dealer and a private mech. and both had a pressure test on it for a couple of hours and could not find the problem. the new thermostat is in right. Could it be the water pump , head gasket ,or heater core. how would you check these things to make sure they're not the problem.

The throwing up out to the recovery tank if that's just what you meant when early in warming up, no heat etc., is all very consistant with a head gasket. Pressure test may hold but combustion gasses are many more psi than the pressure test and some leaks will only leak one way. You'll no doubt find exhaust type gasses in the radiator or recovery tank and can test for that.

Two places were confused by that?? Did they witness this or did you get to explain as you did here?
