heater/ac problems Sign In

I am getting only heat out of all the vents on my 1996 Mazda B2300, even when ac is selected. I took the radio and glove box out to check things out back there making sure that everything was hooked up. I started it up and all of a sudden I had nothing but ac, no matter what was selected I only had ac. I tried to take the truck for a test drive and when I started to move the truck, I could hear a door of some sort slam shut. Is the "blend door" that is closing? If this is the case why is my dial on the climate controls not moving it. Is this door in with the heater core? Im not much of a mechanic so any help will be appreciated

Re: heater/ac problems Sign In

I'm a little confused as to the sequence of events here. You stated you had no cooling and the air flow was coming out of all vents. There are dash vents, defrost vents and floor vents.

Ok, so you got in there and found nothing wrong and a door in the diverter box (not square) and now you have A/C only. Is it cold now and just comes out the dash vents after the noise? Cool air can come out of any of them if the request is working at the control panel. The A/C's evaporator is in there too and yes a diverter door controls which one you get and a blend door allows for different temps.

This had a problem to start with and changed immediaty after you got in there, right?

Hate to ask all the questions but we need to know. Here to help, T

Re: heater/ac problems Sign In

Originally, all I could get to come out of any vent was hot air. It would come out of whatever vent was selected. That is all that would come out. I took it to the Ford dealer and they told me that it was a bad valve on the heater core, and would cost $800 to fix. Everyone I talked to said that sounded like a bunch of bs to them. I went to O'riley Auto Parts to ask about it and see if they had any solutions and the manager said it sounded like it could be the "blend door" to him. I had never heard of that. I got in there and started looking around and took the climate control switchplate off and made sure everything was good and tight, and when I put it together and started up the truck, the ac was working. It was coming out of whatever vent was selcted. I could turn the temperature dial to the hot side and the cold air was still coming out. When I tried to go for a ride I could here the door slamming shut and I was right back where I started with all the hot air. I found a door behind the glove box but nothing seems to move it. What is this door for? Let me know if you need more info. Thanks for replying.

I don't believe what Ford told you either. This sounds more like the pivots on a door have worn out and the door won't move. I don't know anything that a heater core could cause your problem but I'll be thinking about this. T

I have had some people tell me that there is a small plastic piece in the dash somewhere that controls the temp and has a habit of breaking. I have no idea where to begin to look for this part besides just taking the whole dash apart.

I have the same problem with my honda. I can actually switch back and forth if I turn off the engine and change the setting on the panel from hot to cold or vice versa. Did you have any success in getting this fixed? What was the problem? What did it cost?
