I've heard of getting most out using dry ice and put appropriate tank in state of vacuum and you can get most. You can also convert most old now, R-12 machines or some cheaper ones are just slow but work. Just looked at a site I started at and $799 seems to be about it for low end stuff or try used. Watch out for unknown cars that may be loaded with sealers or contaminated/mixed gas if suspected. Sometimes more practical to just let/pay a place well equipped and use new, known virgin gas when in doubt, T PS: Links not generally allowed but I can - visit us at ACSource if you wish at........ http://www.acsource.com/recoverysystems.aspx for parts, tools or forum.

OK - One more before I crash for the morning. I hear you about making a mess. Keep the bucks low unless you can cover the costs as now even 134a will be obsolete for probably 152a which I forget the right chemical name for but sold as COMPUTER DUSTER no less! Never went to an A/C convention but according to Ward Atkinson of Macs 152a will be the new product so much of the equipment will probably be a waste for the long run. This is cold country and A/C was a stupid thing for me to take on as you can't get folks to bother to fix them if vehicle is older at the high prices for everything about it. If you will do enough and equipment costs are too high check out Craigslist or whatever out there for good working used stuff as here anyway shops don't want to even take up the space for such a short season except for accident repairs that wiped out the condenser or something like that. Sometimes it's so cold you can't do it properly and know that the vehicle's system really works T

Venting or removing refrigerant using anything but an approved recycle machine is illegal. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

That's true. You don't want the EPA walking into your shop and seeing something like that even though the EPA doesn't seem to mind letting R-134A, to be sold to the public without a licence, to be blown off into the atmosphere in their backyards. Don't understand the logic in that. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

DS - logic and EPA are is on the line of saying "Jumbo Shrimp." That is on the long list of departments to just dissolve to nothing as they are useless. Currently messing hard with VOCs of common house paint and the list goes on............ T

Many areas of the country, strangely enough Wisconsin, are strict about even 134a. You can buy it in MN without a license but not here. Anyone doing AC work must have a license from the state with the numbers from their machine on it. To even touch AC work here you must also pass a recovery and recycling certification test from the state. Had to do it myself to be allowed to just vac down a system. Only a matter of time before 134 gets treated like R-12 does now. Don't bother trying to build a machine. Buy one or don't waste your time. The EPA people don't get writer's cramp when its time to issue fines.

Heck, they sell that stuff at Walmart in our state along with the lovely leak sealer included in the can. Shop owners love the leak sealer...Not. Who ever invented leak sealer should be shot in the face and hung by their toes. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

YOU GOT THAT RIGHT. NO SEALERS AND THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED AND a study on them showed they didn't work anyway worth a damn and worse, makes the real fix that much harder and more expensive, Tom

I'd like to go on a road trip to every store in the country and pour every little bottle of leak stop in a can, radiator fix, head gasket in a bottle, etc. into an olympic sized swimming pool. Then throw the inventors of the crap into it with a couple car batteries tied to them and let them enjoy a refreshing dip. It would be ironic if the pool leaked later on.

If you poured all that crap in together it would probably turn into cement or it would be a slimy liquid with a nice big fat jello pad layer on the top. Then you can cut a slit in the top of it and insert the inventor head first. Another idea is to fill a water heater, with a bypassed theromstat and no T&P valve, half full with Blue Devil head gasket repair and set it inside a cement block room with a couple of chairs around it. Then tie the guys who came up with that stuff to the chairs. Plug the water heater in and really see how good that stuff is for sealing leaks.. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Or just drag them into a field on a full moon and beat them over the head repeatedly with a piece of heavy mining equipment. Or how about label them a suppository and place them in the rectum of a bull walrus with a bad attitude? No matter what, if I ever find a way to make it happen every mod on this site will receive free plane tickets to come enjoy the show.
