'04 Rendezvous replacement hubs...

'04 Buick Rendezvous, 3.4 liter, front-wheel-drive, abs, traction control. The RR hub makes noise and the wheel speed sensor pigtail was broken off. The LF hub bearings are worn out enough to allow significant end-play and a little tilt or wobble. I'm trying to find Timken parts, since I trust them. The rear looks good with this part:
Timken part #512222
... right down to the metal clip on the pigtail connector. The best fit I can find for the front is good except for the connector clip:
Timken part #513187
This one has a plastic clip that looks like it inserts into a slot or hole. Will that plastic connector clip work with the existing bracket that works with the original metal clip? There are slots in the bracket that look like they might work, but do they? Thanks! Mike

I'm sure that's right, but the only data point I have is the Timken part I installed on the front right a year ago. That one happened to have the metal clip, and provided no alternative. None of the Timken part descriptions I've looked at show anything about extra parts or connector mounting options. It's starting to look like the part number I bought last year must be discontinued. All that I now find for the front end on Timken's site, or anywhere else, is the 513187 with the plastic clip. I suppose it doesn't matter. At best, Timken engineered the part to fit the available bracket and has just streamlined their catalog. At worst, I can modify or fabricate the bracket. <shrug> I edited the first post to show the Timken part numbers, sans links. Hope that's acceptable. Mike

You're just overthinking this. Just a "parts" note. Done with this stuff mostly. Timkin was a great name brand but all are competitive to beat prices and change like the wind what they sell and with what. Another area you can't know easily is if Timkin totally changed, makes anything at all or just buys products for their name on a package. Stinks - brand loyalty seems lost. Try another brand up to a dealer if having troubles. You shouldn't have to make up parts for this job that were not intended for reuse or a separate purchase if no good now to use again?? T

Got the new hubs on the Rendezvous. As Tom was suspecting, the Timken unit for the front was made in Korea. The one for the rear made in USA... Probably no coincidence that the rear hub was substantially more expensive than the front. Time will tell. Both fit fine and turn. The sensor connector on the front has a plastic clip that sticks out from the side that mates with an existing hole in the bracket. Though the original units had the metal clips, this works just fine. The loud bearing noise that's plagued the vehicle for months is gone from the RR, finally. I had to replace a frozen caliper pin in the LF brake assembly. Other than that it all went together smoothly. I still have the Service Traction System message and the Trax and Anti-Lock diagnostic lights. My previous posts addressing that issue met with the suggestion that I get a proper scan tool that will read ABS codes. I never got any answers to my questions about scan-tool options. Which sub-forum would be the best place to open a thread to ask about scan-tool selection? Car Troubleshooting? Mike

Yes - Near impossible to know for sure where a part is made. Brand loyalty is almost lost IMO. Not the whole point you want it to be right and last. About posting for suggestions on other subjects chose "General Discussions" or plain "Open Posting" is always fine. Not sure of your view with your device what you see. Regulars read all or I do if just a glance so just post away and we'll handle it if troubles on that. Seems now for this just finding out why it's not sensing wheel speeds which would trigger warning lights that those features will not work when light is lit. Scan or with all the work make sure wires are at least plugged in now at wheels, T

Thanks Tom. I had hoped the Anti-Lock and Trac lights being on might be fixed when I discovered that the pigtail was broken at the RR hub when I removed the old one. The wires were frayed and the insulation broken. Thought it might have been the problem. No luck. All four connectors are definitely seated now, and there's no longer strain on any of the wiring, thanks to the fact that I oriented the LF hub correctly, unlike the previous installer. I checked the LR, which is the only original hub left. The wires seem fine. The coil has a finite resistance and spinning the hub generates a small but measurable A/C voltage. This is measuring across the two outer wires of the 3-wire connector with a multimeter on resistance and A/C ranges. I did this on the new LF as well. Without a schematic I'm shooting in the dark, however. At least the truck's back to drivable, and I can get back to these problems as I have time. I'll do a thorough troubleshooting as soon as I have the tools, time, and information needed to do it. Thanks, Mike
