1997 Acura Integra RS with 180k miles, 2.0.

While driving, the driver's side CV axle snapped in half, with one side connected to the transmission and the other still hanging out of the tire.

I am a novice at repairing, but am keen on learning. There is an issue that I cannot resolve.

I am aware that I could probably grind this off. A air impact anything is out of question. I am doing this only with ratchets, wrenches, impact bar, torch, WD-40.

I was thinking that perhaps I could remove the entire hub? But the thing is, being inexperienced, I don't know how to replace or what parts I would need if I were to simply remove the entire rotor[is this the hub?] With the other half of the CV axle still attached to the thing. Is this feasible? If so, what would I need to replace?

That looks like you are trying take off the axle nut?

It doesn't look like it's damaged, the best thing to do would be to get a deep socket, 1/2 breaker bar and 4ft cheater bar and take if off by hand if you don't have access to an 1/2 impact gun........

If you are trying to do this without an impact gun and a good one, you might as well just tow it to the shop now. That nut is tightened with about 250 ft/lbs of torque and by the looks of that one, it is peened over on the end which will make it even harder to get off.

Air only works for me. I don't have electric impact tools so carry a very heavy air can to run it but only lasts that long away from shop compressor. I just switched the can's tire end to an auto shop tool air connector not the same as ones used for carpentry air tools BTW.

If you don't just tow it for just this need the "impact" type of tool air I think more in use than electric untested by me personally. Get or make the air container portable is all I can think of or this wont work with brute force well or at all?

IDK - tried that once with extensions on breaker bar to the point it just lifted the car up!

I can't afford to get this done professionally. There is no taking it to the shop, just as there is no turning this nut. The bolt is deformed. The nut is bent around the threads. This thing isn't gonna get turned. I am trying to CIRCUMNAVIGATE the need to pull this nut off, that is what this thread is about. The CV axle is broke in TWO PIECES. I want to remove the entire wheel hub without removing this bolt, which I know is possible. THAT is what I am asking to do here.

Do you have the socket, six point that fits this nut at least and a breaker bar? The nut is history as well as the CV axle maybe more unknown till this is off.

Without any imagination to use air - could even rig up a propane bottle for air at the risk of fire to run an impact gun might be rentable so would have to ask around about that.

Next might even take oxy-acetylene heat get just the nut glowing hot it would come off unknown damage to bearing.

Spend hours probably with a real good chisel and cut the nut at that point bet just channel locks would pull what's left off.

If you don't have a buck for parts or some tools already at least the socket this isn't going back together where it is anyway so park it and forget it till you have some stuff to do it.
There's no telling just yet if it will need more or other damage from in totally breaking in the first place making this very costly or lots more work.

No problem. Said the only answer then - park it and forget it for now,

You know, I want to hit the Lotto too, but it just isn't going to happen. Neither is you changing that axle in your driveway without a very strong impact gun.

Removing the knuckle isn't going to help you because that nut still has to come off. It is part the axle itself.

Even if you did somehow get it apart. the new one has to be tightened to the same torque.

But the axle isn't in one piece is what I am saying. It's literally snapped in half. There are about 16 inches of axle hanging off of the center of the hub. Let's say that there isn't any damage to the transmission... [The other half of the axle is still hanging out of said transmission.] Can't I just remove the entire part with the axle still attached and replace said part? Use impact gun for new axle if I am able to acquire one?

I.E I get a new hub and rotor, what else would I need to assemble the entire thing? If I pull the current hub off with rotor attached it looks like it's only actually being held on by something that isn't attached to the axle nut.

You asked for opinions and you got them. You stubbornly don't want to listen to what experts are telling you.

That nut HAS to come off before that axle can be replaced, whether the knuckle is attached to the car or not. The other half of the axle also has to be removed from the transmission without damaging the transmission.

You are very obviously not equipped or knowledgeable enough to do this without damaging even more of the car.

This thread has pretty much run it's course now so I'm going to close it.
