95 Crown Vic Gearbox Sign In

Hello. I have a 95 Crown Victoria, and for several years it seems to be idling way too fast. Recently when I was having a steering pump replaced, the shop told me that there is a broken switch on the steering gearbox, but it's expensive to replace, so I didn't. After thinking about what might be the purpose of this switch, could it be that it speeds up the engine so as to handle the additional load when turning? The shop said it would be around $400 or so to replace, so I'm assuming the gearbox has to be removed.

Can this be reason for the fast idle? Any way to disable it?

Thanks in Advance,

Guesses only as I'm totally not sure, sorry. Look at gearbox for any wiring - is there? Some vehicle's just put a pressure sensor in line on high pressure hose but don't think this does?
That idea was just to meet load of harder steering such as parking and just keep idle the same or close. Other is "variable rate" which lowers power assist force when traveling straight ahead both for feel and it doesn't need as much or any. Not so sure this has what for these features if any at all?

Idle speed should be more about the IAC then use of power steering but could be wrong.

?? Make sure this diagnosis is correct. Somehow I doubt it. Some models older were known for leaks at Pitman arm shaft and whole box used was the easier fix for many if you trust a used parts place to know their inventory of stuff well or at all.

Even a model year 1995 Ford should have a code if engine isn't idling properly so try to get those read. Most or all would leave a warning light lit if one waiting on OBDII set ups which this should be. Check that the bulb works also with just key on, engine off bulbs light just as a bulb check,

If the power steering pressure switch is unplugged, the engine computer will think the power steering pressure is high and will jack the idle up.
