Steering GONE in my car...Completely! Sign In

Hi,
I have an 05toyotA avensis. Over the last few days there has been a clunking noise when I try to turn left. This is the only symptom that there's anything wrong. Today I turned on ignition, went to drive off and my steering was completely gone. Wheel spinning. Eventually locking but absolutely no control over wheels. SCARY.... OMG...if I had been driving!!! With my kids😕The breakdown mechanic said he had in his 30yrs as a mechanic never seen this before.... Bit freaked out..... Any ideas. Kinda scared to drive again. There was no warning light, no crazy sounds. ... Nothing to indicate there was anything serious about to happen...other than the 'clunking'occasionaly when I turning wheel hard... To the left. Would love some feedback please.
Ignition, acceleration and breaks all perfect!?

you should contact TOYOTA - there was a recall* for a steering failure -

*I believe 2 separate recall issues

I seen that. Was to do with power steering. I have driven it for 12 years without any issues with steering till late last year when my old mechanic did some work on the rack and pinion late last year... I'm thinking it could have something to do with that.le didn't reassemble properly?

I've never seen this before either that wasn't caused by something drastic like a wild auto wreck it is quite rare.

Kev2 said there's a recall so don't necessarily blame anyone as the recalled reason may not be part of any other work that allowed this to happen.

For sure, total loss of steering is unacceptable. Duly noted you ignored a noise as well which are warnings to find out what is wrong to cause one,

the recall - was it addressed previously? It referred to component wear and steering failure, Toyota will assist you in determining if complied with or not.
The recall description and your incident description sound related* - a place to start.
God save the Queen.

*It is possible that the connections at the intermediate shaft and sliding yoke of the steering column may become loose and if the symptoms are ignored steering control can be lost.

The 'clunking 'sound only happened a few times when I locked left...not everytime and not loud enough that would create panic. The car is at garage at the moment... I'll let you all know tomorrow when I know more. Thanks for feedback. Good to know it's a rarity.... Not so happy it's mine... Just glad I'm not dealing with any real trauma!!

Car was never recalled. The only problem is had with steering is last year's pinion and rack

Wish you luck and save your receipts if on a recall list you might not have been found but should be reimbursed.

Just a thought for you as you said you steered it hard to hear this. Not sure the exact model is sold here or same is just another name or what but most are power steering and squeal a belt if you continue to steer when it's at the stop. Either way the stop is the stop turning harder isn't good for either or any use so try to back off just a touch when you know you are there is much better for it.

Understood some parking situations are nasty tight just avoid that if you are pushing harder when it stops on it's own.

Still it's rare to me for steering to give out totally like that. The ones I noticed were wrecks in a junkyard I was getting parts off of for other things still good just noticed it on a couple seriously damaged cars so not shocking,

Hi, spoke to my mechanic today. He said the steering column has come off the rack...just fell off. I'm to ring Toyota Ireland to see if my car was recalled or should have been recalled. He said the work needed is in the range of 1000. But what has happened to my car is very very serious... His words😟feeling a bit upset about the whole bizarre situation

Toyota UK website -

I would still discuss with Toyota - and insist on repairs under 'goodwill' at the least... good luck.
