Can a leak or small hole cause air to enter a power steering system thru the return lines? Was wondering since I am trying to locate where air is being let into the system. 2002 Ford Escort and the rack and pinion is quite hard to reach. Want to eliminate all other causes before removing and installing new rack and pinion. Pump is brand new and still has air in system.
Doing the regular bleed method works... until the car is turned off and sits around for a few hours only to find more air later.

Yes, it can. Fairly common with remote reservoirs.

How does one go about trying to find he specific leak? The only thing Im guessing is soap and water?

Unless you can physically see it, it will be next to impossible to find as there is no way to put pressure to it or anything. I had one once that came from another shop for a noisy pump and they had already replaced the pump twice, the hoses and the rack. Turned out to be the metal pipe between the reservoir and the pump had a crack in it that wasn't visible.

I was afraid of that. Well Im gonna use some bars leak sealer thing for power steering systems. If that dont work, I'll start with replacing the lines first, the reservoir, and lastly the R&P.

Hell no...................... why would you want to destroy your system. That's all that crap (sealer) will do. The only thing it really can be is the feed line from the reservoir.

Phew! Good thing I checked the forum. Was about to go and buy some. Guess I'll start with that line on the reservoir.

In the future I want you to never ever buy any sort of leak sealer anything. Just take that idea right out of your head. It is garbage and will only cause major problems down the road. If that junk worked, parts stores would just be a little room with a bunch of bottles. You can make a small repair into a system overhaul with a $10 bottle of that garbage.
